Falling for faux.

Leather, that is.

Mossimo Faux Leather Jacket

So I mentioned in my last post that I was going to share a couple of items I got at Target, but I’m having buyer’s remorse about one of them so I may end up returning it. The other item I’m loving and will definitely be keeping. I originally saw MakeupbyTiffanyD on YouTube talk about this faux leather jacket and I thought it was cute, but I didn’t really need it. So when I happened upon it while browsing around, it was the only one left and it was in my size. Of course, I took that as a sign to try it on. And of course, I had to have it. It’s really comfortable because of the black knitted paneling on the inner sleeves and sides of the jacket. Despite being ‘faux leather’, it doesn’t look cheap and I think it will hold up well. I have a leather moto jacket from Zara that I think I got last year that I love, but it’s pretty fitted and I can’t wear anything much thicker than a thin sweater under it. This jacket I can put on heavier sweaters and it would work because the sleeves have more give from the paneling.

I layered it over a grey tank and plaid shirt and jeans, as usual. And I like how this jeweled necklace contrasted with the casualness (is that a word?) of the shirt and tank. I have no idea who makes this necklace, it was gifted from a friend.

The jacket is still available online and may be in your local Target store, so if you’re in the market for something like this I’d check it out quickly before it’s gone!

Blue on blue on blue.

I usually just get dressed on the fly, it’s rare that I really plan out what I’m wearing. I knew I wanted jeans so that was easy enough. Then I thought I’d layer this chambray shirt over a black tank. But, after seeing it all together I decided to just stick with the shirt. Of course that just looked a little ‘one note’ so I added this Jewelmint necklace with shades of blue and a few pops of yellow. I liked the way it all looked together so I thought I’d snap a quick pic before leaving for lunch.

Yes, I realize my mirror is a smudgy mess (my daughter likes to stand there and rub her hands all over it), but I didn’t have time to wipe it down before leaving. And I just wanted to keep it real (I’m WAY behind on cleaning).

A closer look

I used to buy a lot of pieces from Jewelmint when it first launched, but I’ve slowed down considerably as of late. But, I love all the jewelry I’ve gotten and most of what I have has held up well and is nicely made. If you haven’t checked Jewelmint out yet, you should!

When in doubt, just add a scarf.

While getting dressed this morning, I felt like my basic outfit needed a little something extra. I actually thought a vest would do the trick, but I didn’t have one that would quite go. So while scanning my closet my eyes fell on this scarf and outfit complete!

I love how scarves are functional and fashionable, giving you a little warmth while adding some interest to what you’re wearing. I love this scarf because it reminds me of something I’d buy from a street vendor or at a flea market. But, it’s actually from Forever 21. I went to the website to see if they still have something similar (I got this maybe 3 years ago?), but there wasn’t anything.

I thought I’d go ahead and share my favorite fall scarves of the moment.

The top is a faux fur infinity scarf by BP. from Nordstrom. This is actually my second one because I lost the first one when I went out one night to celebrate a friend’s 30th. I was pretty sad the next morning when I realized it was gone. But I loved it so much I got another; I had to wait until the next season for it to be available again. This one seems slightly different from the first, I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but it’s pretty close to the original.

The bottom is a Merona grey knitted infinity scarf I recently found at Target. I love the color of course, and the softness in feel and look. I’ll definitely be wearing it a lot this, especially as winter approaches.

I got a couple more clothing items for fall when I was at Target again today. I really need to stop going there so often, but I had to pick up some prescriptions and while we waited I couldn’t help shopping around. One of the items I’m really happy I got considering I would have spent a whole lot more for the real thing. I’ll share soon before it’s gone!

Wearing lately: Making old things new again.

Arden B. sweater & jeans, Forever 21 tank, Sam Edelman boots

I’ve been shopping my closet a lot lately because, let’s face it, kids ain’t a cheap. And I only have one. So I’m trying to show some love to the things in my closet I don’t wear often, but can’t quite bear to part with. I’ve had these jeans and this long, open cardigan from Arden B. forever. I know this because the last time I shopped at that store I was still in college. I know I wore them a lot when I first bought them, but I didn’t even really wear them much pre-pregnancy when I could fit into them. Since there wasn’t anything really ‘wrong’ with either item I couldn’t get rid of them. Yes, I’m a major clothes/make-up hoarder (says my husband). Anyway, the days are getting cooler, but not so much that I need a jacket and a sweater will usually do. So I threw this over a basic white tank and paired it with some distressed jeans and boots. I tucked the tank into my jeans to keep the look a little neater since all the pieces are relatively relaxed in fit. I also added this double chain necklace from Stella & Dot.

Loving necklaces with a bolder chain

So while it’s true I need to do some major editing in my closet, I’m glad I kept these pieces and I’m having fun putting together new outfits with old favorites.

H&M sweater, Siwy jeans, Zara slip-ons

The sun has finally started shining again and I thought this sweater would be appropriate for today’s mommy date outfit. I like brights in any season, not just the spring and summer. I actually bought this sweater when I was pregnant, I tried to buy as much ‘non-maternity’ maternity wear so that I could still enjoy it after she was born. I wore this with a lot with black leggings in those days. But now that I can wear my jeans again, I’m pairing it with those. I also find that wearing jeans helps to keep my eating habits in check-when they start getting tighter, I’m probably over indulging.

Jewelmint gold bar necklace & Forever 21 rhinestone necklace

I used to think that big, bold necklaces could only be worn at night or if I was more dressed up, but that has changed recently. Maybe because I don’t really go out much at night anymore and I miss wearing a lot of my jewelry. I really like how a statement necklace adds to a more casual outfit, making it a little more fun. I wear my gold bar necklace every day (because I never take it off) and I actually liked combination of them together.

Zara slip-ons

I’d been on the hunt for a new pair of flats that are easy to put on and comfortable. I have a pair of gray Tom’s, but I wanted something sturdier. I was thinking of getting the Steve Madden Ecentric slip-on sneakers in leopard print, but I saw these on the Zara website and couldn’t resist them. I’m a sucker for anything gray, I’m not sure why. I also liked the black leather detailing that contrasts with the light gray. I tried to find these on the Zara website, but they’re already gone (seriously, if you ever like something from Zara, just buy it because if you wait too long it will be sold out). I’m still thinking about the SM slip-ons because to me, leopard is a neutral, but I’ve been completely satisfied with these as of late.

FOTD.

I’m also testing out a new makeup product, it’s only been a couple of weeks, but I have to say I’m in love. I want to try it a few more times before I share it and give a proper review.

Anyway, I hope you all are having a great weekend so far!

Comfort food: Macaroni Soup

I mentioned in my last post that it’s been raining here. And cold. So I had a craving for something warm, homemade and comforting. In other words, macaroni soup. Or Filipino chicken noodle soup. Okay, I’m not sure what the actual name for this dish is, I just call it what my family calls it. This is the quick and easy version, I didn’t boil my own chicken and make my own stock (seriously, who has time for that?). I think traditionally evaporated milk is used to thicken it up, too. Cause in the PI, you didn’t have a fridge to keep regular milk cold, so you use the canned stuff (according to my mom). I like using some sort of cream to make it even richer (and more delicious). My dad always makes this with leftover turkey after Thanksgiving and it’s the BEST. But, when you don’t have leftovers from a 12 pound bird, a rotisserie chicken does the trick. Okay, enough talk, time to cook!

IMG_5392

Here’s what you’ll need. Also olive oil, salt & pepper (gimme a break, I’m new at this).

Ingredients:

1/2 rotisserie chicken, shredded

4 32 oz. boxes of chicken stock (I use the no added salt kind)

1 1 lb. box of elbow macaroni

3 carrots chopped

4 stalks of celery chopped

1/2 a medium onion diced

1/2 to 1 cup of heavy cream (or light cream or half & half)

1 T. olive oil

salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Saute onion in olive oil over medium heat in a large pot until translucent. Add carrots and celery and continue to sauté for 3-4 min. Add shredded chicken and sauté for another 3-4 min.

2. Add chicken stock and bring to a boil. Add macaroni and reduce heat to simmer. Continue to simmer until macaroni is cooked to your preference (I like it softer than al dente because it reminds me of home).

3. Remove from heat. Add heavy cream, this I usually do to my preference as well. I don’t actually measure, I just keep pouring and stirring until it’s as rich as I like.

4. Add salt and pepper to taste. I usually will salt as I go, but since Ava is eating this too I decided to just add at the end to make sure she wouldn’t get too much salt. I always put pepper on right before I eat it too.

5. Enjoy!

macsoup

Short-cut Macaroni Soup.

I realize that this recipe isn’t exact, but I’m not a cook and unless I have a recipe for something, I don’t really use measurements. That’s pretty much how I cook any Filipino food-my dad never really told me exactly how much to put in of any ingredient, because he doesn’t measure either (go figure). I pretty much learned this just from watching him cook. I think every Filipino family has their own version of this, so feel free to make it your own too.

Wearing lately: Rainy days.

H&M top, Black Mossimo ‘jeggings’ from Target, Jeffrey Campbell ‘Hanger’ boots, and my crazy top knot cause I’m about to clean the bathroom (glamorous right?)

It’s been raining all week here and the gray skies have worked their way into my wardrobe. I didn’t do much today, just got a trim and touched up my color (trying to be better about going more regularly), then ran some errands with the fam (Wednesdays are our Saturdays because my husband is off). Now it’s time to cozy up on the couch with a hot cup of tea. At least until baby wakes up 🙂

What I’m wearing lately: Having a plaid moment.

IMG_5125

Forever 21 plaid shirt, Forever 21 white T, Black Mossimo ‘jeggings’ from Target, & Chucks.

Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, one being the wardrobe. I love wearing sweaters, jackets, and layering. Plaid can be worn in any season, but I tend to associate it with fall and the cooler weather. Whenever I see a plaid button-up in a store, I immediately gravitate towards it. So when I saw this one at Forever 21, I had to pick it up. Plus, you can’t really beat the price (another reason it’s hard to say no when I’m shopping there). I wore this when Ava and I went to a first birthday party, just an easy, casual outfit that I knew would be comfortable in.

I’m also finally fitting into more of my pre-pregnancy clothes (yay!), so I’m getting more excited about clothes in general. For the first 6 months after she was born, I pretty much wore what I did when she was still in my belly. Losing the baby weight is not easy, I didn’t really gain a crazy amount when I was pregnant so I didn’t worry that much about it coming off. Until it didn’t come off as quickly as I thought. After 6 months of waiting for a miracle to happen, I finally got on program with my diet and I’m getting closer to where I was before. So I’m looking forward to more fall weather and clothing to come.

bluum box: 11 months

I mentioned bluum in a previous post about things that help when you’re out with your fussy baby. Our 11 month bluum box came this afternoon and I thought I’d do an unboxing to give you all an idea of what it’s all about. Like I mentioned before, bluum is a monthly subscription service that caters to expecting moms and children from the newborn stage to 4 years old. Each box comes with 4-5 items, the ones for kids are have age-appropriate toys, books, food, etc. and sometimes an item for mommy too. The website says the items are also curated by moms. It’s always exciting when I open the front door and see this bright red box on our stoop.

Couldn’t wait to open this up!

Our box this month included mostly teething toys, a book, Ella’s Kitchen food pouches, and Luna bars (for mommy).

This month's haul.

This month’s haul.

The items in the box can be hit or miss at times, we were getting a lot of pacifiers and even a paci pouch and Ava is not a paci baby. Otherwise, it’s really a fun way to explore new products and a majority of them we have enjoyed.

I would definitely recommend bluum box as a fun way for you and your baby to discover new things or as a gift for a new mom. It’s been great getting these boxes for the past few months and I’m sad that we only have one more left!

Current daytime makeup routine.

After doing my makeup this morning, I figured I would share what I’ve been reaching for the most.

IMG_5343

Makeup Round-up.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette: I’ve written about his already here, today I used radiant rose.

Makeup Forever Duo Mat Powder in 207: My favorite powder foundation. It helps keep my T-zone from getting too shiny throughout the day since I’m not very good about touching up.

Urban Decay Naked Palette: I usually just throw Buck in my crease with a MAC 217 brush. That’s it.

The Balm Big Mama Palette: I use Bahama Mama to contour/bronze. Apparently this palette has been discontinued, but the bronzer is available as a single item.

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Pressed Finishing Powder: This is fairly new, but I really love it so far to set my concealer and along my T-zone. It really does help to minimize the look of pores around my nose.

Maybelline Full ‘N Soft Waterproof Mascara in Black: One of my drugstore faves, it does exactly what it’s named.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Soft Brown: The formula and tiny nib make it easy to fill in brows and I love having the spoolie on the other end.

Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel in Brunette: Since lightening my hair, this lessens the contrast between my brows and hair color without having to dye my brows. My hairs on my left eyebrow also tend to point downward so this keeps them in place.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liquid Liner in Trooper: Also reviewed here.

Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard: I use this under my eyes and on any blemishes, it’s perfect for concealing and brightening the under eye area. I could probably use a slightly darker shade for blemishes, but it works in a pinch.

Benefit Posiebalm in Poppy Pink: I got this recently as a 100-point perk at Sephora and I do like it. It’s not necessarily anything to write home about, but I do find myself reaching for it pretty often and I like the color is gives.

Still in PJs, but I feel better already!

Now that the winter months are coming, my skin is starting to get a little drier and I’m thinking about switching to a tinted moisturizer to combat it. I’ve tried the ones from Laura Mercier and Nars, but the LM felt to heavy and I think the Nars broke me out. If you have any recommendations let me know!
